ABC islands (Lesser Antilles)


The ABC islands are the three western-most islands of the Leeward Antilles in the Caribbean Sea that lie north of Falcón State, Venezuela. From west to east they are, in order Aruba, Curaçao, and Bonaire. All three islands are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, although they remain outside the European Union.
The Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao are the three western-most islands of the Leeward Antilles in the South Caribbean off the coast of Venezuela. They are collectively known as the ABC islands. Their shared Dutch colonial history and West Indian heritage, plus their fortuitous location outside of the tropical hurricane belt, make these islands a coveted playground for snowbirds, sun seekers, avid windsurfers and scuba divers. Aruba is approximately 15 miles off the coast of Venezuela, Curaçao is about 40 miles north of Venezuela, and Bonaire is 50 miles away from Venezuela. Aruba is the western most island, Curaçao is located about 50 miles east of Aruba, and Bonaire is another 30 miles east of Curaçao. Aruba and Bonaire both are about a 20 minute flight from Curaçao, 30 minutes from Caracas, and 2 1/2 hours from Miami.

SS Antilla was a Hamburg America Line (HAPAG) cargo ship that was launched in 1939 and scuttled in 1940. Antilla was built for trade between Germany and the Caribbean, and was named accordingly. Antilla is a city in Holguín Province in eastern Cuba.
Antilla SS was a German cargo steamer of 4,363 tons built in 1939 by Deuitsche Werft, Finkenwarder for the Hamburg-Amerika Linie, Hamburg. On the 11th May 1940 she was scuttled off Aruba. The Antilla is World War II shipwreck off the coast of Aruba that is a popular snorkeling and scuba diving destination.

Hooiberg


Hooiberg is a 165 m (541 ft) high volcanic formation on the island of Aruba. It is located almost in the center of the island and can be seen from virtually anywhere on the island. The Dutch word hooiberg, literally translates into haystack in English, as the landform is said to resemble a stack of hay.

From what we have found on this forum, it looks like we might be able to hop on a bus near the Amsterdam Manor and travel up to the Malmok Beach/Boca Catalina/Catalina Cove area. It looks like Malmok Beach is a good place to snorkel from shore, and Catalina Cove is good snorkeling but a more
Catalina Cove is slightly North of the more popular Boca Catalina. The entry is very easy for all levels. There are no facilities here, but a couple of nice shades from the Sun. Directions: Head to the North part of the island.

Situated along the northeast coast in Aruba’s National Park Arikok, this secluded beach forms the perfect example for Aruba’s north shore iconic scenery.  The white dunes in high contrast with the rocky shores make this idyllic spot very appealing to take a swim.
